Might Fukushima Explain the Rapid Recent Decline in Arctic Ice and the Rapidly Expanding Hole Over the Arctic

Depletion of the ozone layer over the Arctic and the melting ice in the region are not new phenomena. However, over the last two years these problems have rapidly and substantially worsened.

I wonder whether the heat and excess gamma radiation in the atmosphere from the decay of radioactive isotopes from Fukushima is responsible?

Fukushima radiation is moving around the globe on the jet stream and people who have been using their radiation detectors to assess fallout have found a general increase in background radiation, especially on the US west coast and in the Rockies.

Let me provide documentation for the worsening of the ozone hole and melting of the Arctic ice, as well as some supporting evidence for the possibility that Fukushima is contributing to these unfortunate changes for humans.

I'll also examine what scientists had to say about the effects of a limited nuclear war on global food production and the ozone level in February of 2011.

ARCTIC ICE DEATH SPIRAL

Why the Arctic Sea Ice Death Spiral Matters By Joe Romm, ThinkProgress  27 August 12
http://www.readersupportednews.org/news-section2/312-16/13145-why-the-arctic-sea-ice-death-spiral-matters

[Excerpt] In the past week the Arctic sea ice cover reached an all-time low, several weeks before previous records, several weeks before the end of the melting season. The long-term decline of Arctic sea ice has been incredibly fast, and at this point a sudden reversal of events doesn't seem likely. The question no longer seems to be "will we see an ice-free Arctic?" but "how soon will we see it?".

ARCTIC OZONE HOLE BREAKS RECORD

In October 2011 the New Scientist announced "Arctic Ozone Hole Breaks All Records"
http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn20988-arctic-ozone-hole-breaks-all-records.html

The New Scientist was covering research published in Nature: Unprecedented Arctic ozone loss in 2011. Nature 478,469–475(27 October 2011) doi:10.1038/nature10556
http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v478/n7370/full/nature10556.html

Abstract: Chemical ozone destruction occurs over both polar regions in local winter–spring. In the Antarctic, essentially complete removal of lower-stratospheric ozone currently results in an ozone hole every year, whereas in the Arctic, ozone loss is highly variable and has until now been much more limited. Here we demonstrate that chemical ozone destruction over the Arctic in early 2011 was—for the first time in the observational record—comparable to that in the Antarctic ozone hole. Unusually long-lasting cold conditions in the Arctic lower stratosphere led to persistent enhancement in ozone-destroying forms of chlorine and to unprecedented ozone loss, which exceeded 80 per cent over 18–20 kilometres altitude. Our results show that Arctic ozone holes are possible even with temperatures much milder than those in the Antarctic. We cannot at present predict when such severe Arctic ozone depletion may be matched or exceeded.

Majia here: Once has to wonder whether this UNPRECEDENTED hole was caused by Fukushima's UNPRECEDENTED release of radiation....

EVIDENCE OF FUKUSHIMA FALLOUT

Here is a summary of US based research on Fukushima Fallout I've compiled: http://majiasblog.blogspot.com/2012/06/summary-of-us-based-research-on.html

COULD FUKUSHIMA FALLOUT AFFECT CLIMATE AND ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS?

Previously I posted speculation on a possible relationship between this year's drought in the midwest and Fukushima http://majiasblog.blogspot.com/2012/07/drought-and-nuclear-testsaccidents.html

The post looked at scientific linkages that were posited in the past between nuclear testing and drought:

"Earthquakes and Nuclear Testing" by Dr. Gary Whiteford. Paper presented to the Second International Conference on the United Nations and World Peace, Seattle, Washington,
14 April 1989
http://www.orgonelab.org/UnusualNuclearEffects.pdf

[excerpt from the article on a previous study]:
The Spring 1992 issue of Journal of Orgonomy (1) carried a paper by James DeMeo describing research undertaken in 1990-1991 on the California drought, with a "Special Note on Underground Nuclear Testing and the Oakland Wildfires" that bears repeating here:

Weather Response to Nuclear Testing: In prior articles, I discussed a possible connection between underground nuclear bomb testing in Nevada to weather changes in the Western US.(2) A graph was published showing changes in 500 mb pressure over Nevada and Montana in 1990, with a generalized association with nuclear tests. Nuclear testing appeared to have increased atmospheric pressure in the upper atmosphere, a possible factor in the expansion of high-pressure drought conditions in the West. [end excerpt]

Majia here: Also of interest is Ernest Bondietti's "Effects on Agriculture" published by Springer in 1982 on behalf of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, which examines the effects of radiation on crops.

Majia here: There is evidence that suggests that the decay of radioactive isotopes in the atmosphere may impact atmospheric conditions, producing warming conditions.

There is also evidence that radiation contamination in the atmosphere could adversely impact the planet's ozone level:

Limited Nuclear War Could Deplete Ozone Layer, Increasing Radiation Feb 24, 2011 Chris Schneidmiller
http://www.nti.org/gsn/article/limited-nuclear-war-could-deplete-ozone-layer-increasing-radiation/
[Excerpted] -- A nuclear conflict involving as few as 100 weapons could produce long-term damage to the ozone layer, enabling higher than "extreme" levels of ultraviolet radiation to reach the Earth's surface, new research indicates (see GSN, March 16, 2010).

“A regional nuclear exchange of 100 15-kiloton weapons … would produce unprecedented low-ozone columns over populated areas in conjunction with the coldest surface temperatures experienced in the last 1,000 years, and would likely result in a global nuclear famine,” according to a presentation delivered on Friday at a major science conference in Washington.

MAJIA HERE: As few as 100 weapons could cause long term damage to the ozone causing "global nuclear famine"?

Uh oh!!!!!

Professor Hiroaki Koide, Nuclear Reactor Specialist and Assistant Professor at Kyoto University Research Reactor Institute also spoke at the conference.[i]

Prof. Koide discussed the amount of radiation released in March of 2011 and discussed the status of the reactors at the plant. He stated that the Japanese government report submitted to the IAEA quantified the radiation released by the explosions of March 2011 at 15,000 terabecquerels of cesium-137 alone. This figure did not include other radionuclides, nor did it include cesium released of radionuclides into the ocean. Yet, it amounted to 170 times the amount of cesium-137 released by the Hiroshima explosion (Hiroshima was 89 terabecquerels of cesium-137).

See also: Asahi: Radioactive cesium spread 600 km in waters off Fukushima
"...scientists said, in amounts that reached 100 times pre-accident levels."

Majia here: And Fukushima Emissions have been continuous since the explosion!!! (see http://majiasblog.blogspot.com/2012/08/lies-lies-and-more-lies.html)

And the US is experiencing a terrible drought in the Midwest that is destroying soy, corn and wheat crops.http://majiasblog.blogspot.com/2012/07/us-corn-and-soy-crops-at-risk.html

CIRCUMSTANTIAL EVIDENCE SUGGESTS THAT FUKUSHIMA MAY BE ALTERING THE CLIMATE AND ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS IN WAYS THAT WILL HAVE DIRECT ADVERSE IMPACTS ON FOOD PRODUCTION

Let us hope I am wrong.

  2. Majia - it is a fair question as to whether Fukushima has had an effect on our weather.

However you need to separate that from the arctic ice question.

Because Arctic ice may be at the "lowest level in recorded history", however recorded history is about 35 years.

That's how long they have records for arctic ice pack.

And, we are at a high temp for those 35 years, and have been holding in that position for about 15 years.

This summer has been hot, so it stands to reason you're going to have a high melt.

Every year the greenies put out this arctic ice scare the last week of August. In March they show ice shelfs breaking off the East Antarctic shelf.

What they don't tell you are many of the facts. Fact: Arctic ice is a very small percentage of ice on earth. Fact: Arctic ice has been on a downward trend for at least 250 years. Fact: End of August is the lowest extent of Arctic ice every year and the highest extent of Antarctic ice - Antarctic ice is at it's record high level right now - and that's much more significant than Arctic ice. Fact: Arctic ice is floating. Melting arctic ice doesn't have any effect on sea level.

This is theater, intended to occupy the greenies on something that isn't real, and getting them riled up to support pet energy projects.

Always make sure you read between the lines.

  3. Majia, after 20 plus years in Hawaii, nothing was more clear the summer after the Fuku, the weather was far far weirder than ever before, in Hawaii, we have no lightning, but there were numerous and magnificint lighting storms, the clouds looked weird, ALL of the flies went away, and I have 2 large German Shepherds, and we pick up the poop at least every day....but that means flies, and there were NONE! For a year. There is no doubt.

  4. Ozone is a fragile molecule. It doesn't take much of a radiation punch to knock loose one of the O's.
